The Muir Gheal Story

From 1982 to today. A family business rooted in Irish aquaculture, continuing a legacy of innovation and commitment to the Gaeltacht.

Muir Gheal Teo (1982-2009)

My father, Damien Ó Ceallacháin, started Muir Gheal Teo in 1982, based in Connemara in the heart of the Gaeltacht. He was a passionate advocate for the Irish aquaculture industry and the Irish language.

Muir Gheal Teo was a family-owned aquaculture company that mainly dealt in the salmon farming industry. The company operated sites within Cill Chiaráin bay and employed 60 people in the Gaeltacht region. Many innovative technologies came through those doors, along with many great staff.

Damien was a recognised figure in Irish aquaculture. When he passed away in 2009, the then Minister of State for Fisheries, Tony Killeen, described him as a "father figure" in the industry. The Irish Farmers' Association called him a "leader, mentor and friend" who showed huge commitment to community development and to the Irish language.

He has been an inspiration to me and fuelled my passion for aquaculture since my earliest memories on the turmecs, trying to get the scoop over the handrail.

Learning the Trade

I've been involved in this industry since I was old enough to stand on a boat. Working alongside my father, I learned about salmon farming, site management, equipment, and the challenges of working on the western seaboard.

You learn a lot growing up in a family business. Not just the technical side, but also the importance of doing things properly, treating people well, and understanding that the work you do is part of something bigger than just a business.

My father was passionate about innovation. He believed the Irish aquaculture industry had great potential, and he was always looking at new technologies, new approaches, better ways of doing things. That mindset stuck with me.

Muir Gheal Aquaculture (2023-Present)

In 2023, I established Muir Gheal Aquaculture. It's a privilege to be able to use the Muir Gheal name as we try to bring some of that passion and enthusiasm back.

This is a different business from Muir Gheal Teo. We're not running salmon farms ourselves. Instead, we're focused on supplying equipment and technical support to aquaculture operations and marine businesses across Ireland and Scotland.

We want to support innovation here at home, but we also want to bring in the technological advances we've seen work in other aquaculture-rich areas of the world. That means HDPE workboats that have proven themselves in Norwegian fjords and Scottish sea lochs. Diesel outboards with genuinely impressive fuel efficiency. Modular pontoon systems. ROV services.

We're based in the same place my father was - Lettermore, Connemara. We know what it's like working on the western seaboard. We understand the challenges because we've been part of this industry for over 40 years.

Our Approach

Bespoke Solutions

Most of what we do is bespoke, not off-the-shelf. Every operation has different challenges, different requirements. We work with you to figure out what you actually need, then source or build it.

International Partnerships, Local Knowledge

We have technical partnerships with suppliers who've been refining their equipment in established aquaculture regions. But we understand Irish and Scottish conditions. That combination - proven international technology adapted by people who understand local conditions - is what we're trying to offer.

The Gaeltacht Connection

My father's passion for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht was genuine. Muir Gheal Aquaculture is based in the same place, in the same community. We're committed to the Gaeltacht region and to maintaining that connection between aquaculture development and community development.

What's Next

We're still a young company (established in 2023) but we're building on 40 years of heritage. Our plan is straightforward: continue to serve aquaculture operations and marine businesses across Ireland and Scotland with equipment they can depend on.

We're not trying to be the biggest supplier. We're trying to be the most reliable, the most knowledgeable, and the most committed to getting it right.

That's what my father would have expected. That's what our customers deserve.
